Designing wiki pages for teaching mathematics

This page contains some links and advice about how to set out material to encourage effective learning. Some of the advice is typographical, some pedagological. Some advice is just my own personal prejudices that contribute to our house-style.

Web design and typography:

• I've found Jacob Nielsen & Marie Tahir, Homepage Usability (New Riders, 2002) useful.
  • This might be a bit out of date now, but it's what I had on the shelf.
  • Here's a summary of their 113 usability guidelines.

Instructional design on the web:

• A primer on Mathematical Interface Design by June Lester, Simon Frazer University's School of Interactive Arts and Technology.
• A blog thread by Dan Mayer: 'does the medium matter?' explores the importance/relevance of the mode of presentation of a mathematical question.
• In another thread '[anyqs] two weeks later' Dan Mayer discusses an interesting suggestion for a mathematical activity using SatNav maps as a case study in re-formatting presentation.
